Topographical painter Paulus Constantijn la Fargue started painting townscapes in the early 1760s. His works are often small and mimic the precision of works by Jan van der Heyden. Topographical views such as this were popular in the eighteenth century and today they serve as valuable historic records; the present work shows the 'Amsterdam Gate' in the city of Haarlem, which remains unchanged since the eighteenth century.
