At the origins of Abstract Expressionism, few artists left such an indelible mark as Sam Francis. In 1955, at a time when the art world was in a frenzy of experimentation, F♛rancis produced this work, demonstrating his mastery of colour and form. These warm colours, shot through with vibrant fission, testify to his unbridled creativity and continue to demonstrate that his art is not only a visual feast, but also an emotional journey.

Yet Sam Francis' career began in a very different way. It was only in the late 1940s, following a two-year hospitalization for tuberculosis of the bone and a plane crash while serving as a fighter pilot in the US Air Corps during the Second World War, that he began to paint. Working in San Francisco Bay, he gradually followed in the footsteps of the pi🎐oneers of the previous generation, such as Milton Avery, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorkyand Mark Rothko. Finally꧙, Sam Francis moved to Paris in 1950, thanks to financial support from the G.I Bill. There he was able to contemplate the masterpieces of the Fauves and Impressionists, whose wild use of colour enthralled him.

The present work bears witness to the artist's experiments, between the matura🥃tion of American abstraction and the discove🔯ry of European light and touch.

Aux origines de l'expressionnisme abstrait, peu d'artistes ont laissé une marque aussi indélébile que Sam Francis. En 1955, alors que le monde de l’art est en pleine frénésie expérimentale, Francis exécute la présente oeuvre démontrant sa maîtrise de la couleur et de la forme. Ces couleurs chaudes, traversées d’une fission vibrante, témoigne de sa créativité débridée et continue de démontrer que son art n'est pas seulement une fête visuell🍸e, mais aussi un voyage émotionnel.

Pourtant, la carrière de Sam Francis avait commencé bien différemment. C’est seulement à la fin des années 1940, à la suite d'une hospitalisation de deux ans pour une tuberculose osseuse et après un accident d'avion survenu alors qu'il était pilote de chasse pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale pour l'US Air Corps, qu’il commence à peindre. En travaillant dans la baie de San Francisco, il se hisse progressivement à la suite des pionniers de la💛 génération précédente, tels que Milton Avery, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky et Mark Rothko. Enfin, Sam Francis s’installe à Paris en 1950, grâce au soutien financier du G.I Bill. Il peut alors y contempler les chefs d’oeuvre des fauves et des impressionnistes dont le traitement sauvage des couleurs l’enthousiasme.

La présente oeuv𓃲re témoigne ainsi des expérimentations de l’artiste entre maturation de l’abstraction américaine et découverte du travail de la lumière et de la touche des Européens.
