Description

Frederick W. Smith

The florists’ magazine: a register of the newest and most beautiful flowers… Vol. 1 [apparently all published]. London: Orr and Smith, 1836

FIRST EDITION, 4to (260x 185mm.), half-title, engraved title with coloured vignette, dedication, 47 hand-coloured engraved plates, contemporary straight-grained green half morocco gilt, slight spotting

Pritzel calls for 72 plates, the total stated in the preface as completing volume 1 of this work; however, Stafleu refers to copies with 47 and 59 plates (''our infomation is evidently incomplete''), which suggests that the work was discontinued at an early stage, although s꧟ome copies were probably issued with t🌄he plates available at the time. Frederick William Smith (1797-1835) and his brother Edwin Dalton Smith were both botanical artists.
