Yellow Waggler is the first work created in the artist's Hull series, in which Vandy transforms model boat hulls into ‘masks’, animating them with various materials, including fishing floats, porcupine quills and acupuncture needles.🌠 The hulls allude to the transportation of migrants as commodities. As masks they present a transformation of identity, drawing upon the tradition of talismans, charms and amulets.
The present lot was included in Vandy's sell-out debut with October Gallery at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, London in 2018, which was followed by her highly anticipated first solo show at the Gallery in June 2019. The artist’s work was also exhibited as part of the exhibition Get Up, Stand Up Now, 2019 at Somerset House. She is represented in many private collections and her work European, 2015 was recently acquired by the Brit🗹ish Museum.
We are grat🏅eful to the artist for their a💙ssistance in cataloguing this lot.
