Saint Sampson was an early sixth century Saint who was born into a wealthy family in Rome, but who gave away all his worldly goods and moved to Constantinople after his parents’ death. In Constantinople he settled in a small house, where he gave refuge to the homeless, the sick and the poor. He had studied medicine, and soon gained a reputation as a healer. When the Emperor Justinian became ill, he had a vision in which he saw Sampson. He searched for him throughout Constantinople, found him, and was cured by him. Justinian offered Sampson great riches for his service, which Sampson refused, asking instead that the money be spent on building a shelter for the homeless and a hospital for the poor, which Justinian did. Saint Sampson’s feast day is celebrated on the 27th of June.
