LUNAR SURFACE FLOWN LM "COAS [Crewman Optical Alignment Sight] Boresight Log" Data Card, part of the Data Card Kit, LM XFR, SEB32100025-303. [Houston, Texas: NASA, Manned Spa꧅cecraft Center, 1969.]
4 by 1 1/2 inches, printed to recto of heavy card stock.𓆉 Two Velcro rectangles affixed to v﷽erso. This lot will be accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed from BUZZ ALDRIN.
Inscribed "Used on the lunar surface on Apollo XI," and SIGNED BY "BUZZ ALDRIN" to verso
Directly from the Personal Collection of Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin
BUZZ ALDRIN'S provenance letter reads, in part: "This COAS Boresight Log data card was used in conjunction with the Crewman Optical Alignment Sight (COAS) to help determine the spacecraft attitude prior to a propulsion system engine burn. This card would have been used to mark and log the star that appeared in the COAS gunsight scope that was attached to the spacecraft window.
The Command Module Pilot in Columbia (Michael Collins), or the Commander in Eagle (Neil Armstrong) would sight through the COAS and if the star was in the correct place within the scope area, then the spacecraft was in the proper attitude to fire the engine to make a rendezvous with the other spacecraft in orbit. The crewman would then mark the point where the star was on this card."
