Constitution of the United States of America, with the Amendments thereto: to which are added Jefferson's Manual of Parliamentary Practice, the Standing Rules and Orders for conducting business in the House of Representatives and Senate of the United States, and Barclay’s Digest. Washington, 1860–1861


8vo (228 x 148 mm). Separate title-page and pagination for the Digest; occasional foxing, most severe on endpapers and the beginning and end of the text. Contemporary purple roan, marbled edges; spine fꦅaded, extremities worn, front joint cracked at head.


This omnibus edition was prepared by John M. Barclay, assistant Clerk of the House of Representaives, by order of the House. The edition remained in use for at least a generation since this copy is signed by Senator John F. Miller of Californa. Born in Indiana, Miller moved to California, wher♋e he practiced law until the outbreak of the Civil War. Serving in the Union Army for nearly the full duration of the conflict, Miller was ultimately brevetted as a major general for his actions at the Battle of Nashville, Deceꦯmber 1864. Returning to California after the War, he was elected to the Senate in 1880, serving until his death in 1886.
