the vase of tapered ovoid form and short neck, copper-gilt mounts, decorated in various coloured enamels and thicknesses of gold and gilt brass wire, with open fan and circular cartouches alternately depicting butterflies among iris, peony, chrysanthemum, magnolia, morning glories and cherry blossom on a black ground of scrolling chrysanthemum heads and karakusa, the shoulder decorated with ho-o birds, paulowania and further karakusa on a rich brown ground
