School of Lorraine, 17th Century
A male figure seen from behind, carrying a staff or fishing rod
Pen and brow👍n ink a🐟nd wash over traces of black chalk
197 by 119 mm; 7¾ by 4¾ in
This lively drawing was traditionally attributed to the Neapolitan artist Salvator Rosa due, in part, to the energetic handling of the pen and abunda⛄nt use of brown wash, as well as the subject matter, that of a shepherd or fisherman with his back turned to the viewer, all of which 🃏are hallmarks of Rosa's graphic style.
Upon closer inspection it seems more likely that the drawing is 👍French and seems to have been executed by an artist active in the Duchy of Lorraine, under the influence of artists such as Jacques Callot (1592-1635) and Jacques Bellange (1575-1616).
