A Romance with Jade: From the De An Tang Collection, Yon🤡gshougong, Palace Museum, Beijing, 200💟4, cat. no. 84.
Superbly carved to capture a dynamic sense of movement, this piece is notable for its outsꦕtanding composition of a mandarin fish swimming alongside of a smaller carp through meandering weed and cresting waves. The curve created by the coiling carp – which appears to be ready for a leap – is carefully balanced by the leafy weed. The other side, with the mandarin fish elegantly raised by sinuous waves, complement🐠 the overall design with a sense of tranquillity.
This auspicious combination of the mandarin fish and the carp, symbolising prosperity and wealth, however, is relatively rare. Compare a jade carving of two carps among waves, in the collection of Brian S. McElney, and exhibited in Chinese Jades from Han to Ch’ing, Asia Society, New York, 1980, cat. no. 90; and another depicting a ✨single mandarin fish swimming through flowering lotus and trailing leaves, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 26th November 2014, lot 3347.
