Edward Clifford, a follower of Edward Burne-Jones, was deeply religious, and served as honorary Secretary of the evangelical Church Army. He often looked to Biblical passages for subject matter and the present watercolor illustrates Psalm LXIX, written in the upper left corner, which begins "Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul." Offered in the original frame.
