Despite the apparent signature and dating to the verso, the author of this distinctive drawing, after Ferrau Fenzoni's fresco of the same subject for the Scala Santa, Rome, has thus far proved elusive. Fenzoni's fresco was completed in 1587 making the present work, which is dated 1591, an extremely early record of the composition.  The drawing style is very reminiscent of that of the Brussels artist Hans Speckaert (circa 1540-circa 1577).  See also the following lot, apparently by the same hand.
