Description

Classical Indian paintings from a Distinguished New York Privat𒊎e Collecti💝on

Watercolor on paper

6⅛ by 8⅝ in., 15.8 by 22.1 cm

This lovely watercolor can be attributed to Cha💎rles Ramus Forrest (fl. 1802-1827) a Lieutenant-Colonel in the British Army in India (1807-1811) and a painter, draftsman and military topographical artist who was born in England although his birth-year does not seem to be recorded.

The present painting appears to be an original watercolor "made on the spot" for his series "A Picturesque Tour Along the River Ganges and Jumna in India", which contains twenty-four fine hand-colored aquatint plates engraved by G. Hunt and T. Sutherland after original watercolors by Forrest. Although unsigned, it can confidently be attributed to him given it shows precisely the same scene as one of those aquatints in nearly every detail - and appears to be in the same hand as other works known to be by him. That published series is considered one of t𒀰he finest 𓃲of the European compendiums of "picturesque views" of India's landscape and architecture created during the 19th century.

The present scene depicts Sacrigali (ie Sicre Gully) which is﷽ a village on the Ganges River below the Rajmahal Hills - the top of which forms the boundary between Bihar and Bengal - known as ❀the Pass of Sakrigali.

The watercolor is painted in a refi♉ned, realistic manner in vignette style showing just a portion of the surrounding topography with its hilltop temple, tents, handlers and resting elephant all beautifully visu𝐆alized.
