Painted during the 1830s, this fresh and spontaneous oil study its typical of the plein air sketches that Watts was moved to paint at this early stage of his career. At this time he, like Constable, was living at Hampstead and it seems likely that the two artists knew each other. A group of comparable oil studies were sold in these Rooms, 19 March 2003, lots 83-89.
