Pen and dark brown ink, black chalk and brown wash (recto);

bears numbering and attribution in black chalk, verso: JB.No.72 / Fra Salviati

Despite the old attribution to Salviati, inscribed in chalk on the reverse, the distinctive combination of pen, chalk and wash seen on the recto of this intriguing sheet seem very much more northern in character, as do the facial types. There a parallels with the idiosyncratic drawing style of the Basel-born master Joseph Heintz the Elder (1564-1609), who worked primarily in Rome, Prague and Augsburg.
