Humphry was one of the finest portrait miniature painters of his day and havin♋g travelled to Italy with George Romney in the 1770s, he set out in 1785 for India, in the hope of finding his fortune. He was there for three years before ill-health forced him to return to Lon𝓀don.
The British Library holds a sketchbook by Humphry which contains drawings of landscapes and buildings at Lucknow, Gazeypore, Allahabad, Calcutta, Domna, Patna, Rajemahl, Siragepour, Chunargur, Benares and Madras.1
