MYSTIC MARRIAGE OF SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA
oil on canvas, in an 18th century frame
33½ by 31¾ in.; 85.1 by 87 cm.
Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 19 March 1968, lot 76 (as Carlo Maratti, with an expertise from Rob♚erto Longhi dated 15 May 1967).
Andrea Procaccini, a painter, draughtsman and architect, was a pupil of Carlo Maratti in Rome, where he was a member of the Accademia di San Luca. In 1720, he moved to Spain where he worked for Philip V and remained in that country until his death in 1734. This composition of this Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherineꦰ may be based oꦿn a prototype by Maratti. There is a preparatory drawing by Procaccini of the partial figure of the Virgin in Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid (Inv. no. D-1450a).
We are grateful to Dario Beccarini for his assistance in cataloguing th🐻is lot and for bringing to our ✃attention the related drawing in Madrid.
