Description
An Attic Black-figured Amphoriskos
circa 575-525 B.C.
painted on the body in a continual frieze with two courting birds, a swan with wings outstretched and an owl, dots and a r🌟osette💎 in the field, and on the shoulder with grazing goats, the details in added red.
Height 14.4 cm.

The painting of the present amphoriskos displays stylistic similarities with the work of a group of painters active in Athens in the mid 6th century known as the Dolphin Group, who predominantly painted small lekythoi. See in particular an amphoriskos in Amsterdam (Haspels, 1936, Attic Black-figured Lekythoi, p. 16; BAPD 14087) and a lekythos in Hamburg (Beazley, 1971, Paralipomena, p. 199, no. 11; BAPD 351465).
