Mamet's prose details an encounter between a young boy, on the eve of his bar mitzvah, and an old man whose antique watch reveals something of man's relation to God. Of the accompanying drawings, Sultan writes: "The drawings in Bar Mitzvah weave in and out of David's text and at the same time tell a parallel story. This story follows a historical line that melds tiꦍme and history both politically and artistically... They chronicle the historical ๊fascination with decoration and the gradual stripping away of that decoration as a result of mechanical ideology."
