Description
Heredia, Jose Maria
Poesías del ciudadano José-Maria de Heredía, ministro de la audiencia de México. Segunda edición, corregida y aumentada. Toluca [Mexico]: Imprenta del Estado a cargo de Juan Matute, 1832.
2 vols. 16mo (136 x 92 mm) ♊Expected light🎃 toning, more so in first volume. Modern calf gilt to style.
Rare edition of the most complete edition of Heredia's poems published in his lifetime.
The first edition of this work was ඣpublished by Behr & Kahl in New York in 1825 while the great Cuban-born Romantic poet was in exile for his political activities. However, Heredia acknowledged this earlier edition in his preface to this one and thus termed the present work a second edition, though it is certainly the first printed in Mexico where he was cont﷽inuing his exile from Cuba. He eventually became a Mexican citizen, giving this rare edition additional importance.
Heredia ("El Cantor del Niagara")&๊nbsp;is now acknowledged as one of the premiere poets in 🅷the Spanish language and given credit for being the first Romantic poet of the Americas.
A rare work. There is only ♔a single auctio🐻n records for this first Toluca edition, and only three copies recorded in institutional collections Yale, Harvard, and the University of Texas Benson Collection.
