S otheby’s Annual Spring Sale is one the of most anticipated events in the luxury market. For such an occasion, our spirits team is proud to present Finest and Rarest Spirits, a sale that encompasses holy grail bꦚottles that would draw attention around the globe,🐷 as well as hidden gems that you might have been searching for years, but have never came across.

As usual, the most popular Scotch distillery – Macallan, takes the spotlight in the sale, with the oldest whisky ever bottled, the Macallan 81 Year Old – The Reach. On each of its sides are the 78 Year Old and 74 Year Old from the Red Collection. We are also thrilled to offer an entire set of the extremely popular Exceptional Single Cask 2017 Series. These highly sought after bottles are often considered as some of the best liquids from t🥂he modern era Macallan.෴ Other popular distilleries such as Port Ellen, Lagavulin, Brora and Bowmore…etc are also featured.

Moving onto Japanese whiskies, rare Karuizawa single cask bottlings, Hanyu cards series, Chichibu single casks and Yamazaki single casks bottlings are all being offered in substantial quantity. Regular releases from both Suntory and Nikka are both offered for drinkers looking to stock up their shelves. An interesting bottle that stands out from the crowd is the Suntory blended whisky of 1962 vintage, produced for the 50th Anniversary of Young Presidents Organization. This bottle i🐻s believed to contain Yamazaki malts from the vintage of 1962, since it was the only operating malt distillery Suntory owned at that time. This is the very first time this extremely rare bottle has been featured in Sotheby’s.

Finest and Rarest Spirits is o🔯pen bidding online from Wednesday 20th March 2024, with the live auction being scheduled for 2nd April 2024 11:00am HKT at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

Without further a due, lets take a look at some of the highlights from the sale.

The oldest whisky, the oldest Macallans

The importance of the “age statement” has been a debate for decades, an ongoing tug of war between consumers, collectors, and the distilleries themselves. One thing for sure is that in recent years, we have witnessed the barrier of what we used to think of as the physical limit of aging constantly being broken, by distilleries with the longest his🙈tory and richest reserves.

While we all know that aging a whisky imparts more flavour from the wood to the liquid, few people understand the limitations behind the art. Since wood is not an airtight vessel, natural evaporation occurs during the aging process, of which we refer to as “the angel’s share”. Alcohol is more volatile than water, therefore it evaporates at a higher rate hence lowering the liquids’ overall ABV over time, at an average rate of -0.5% per year in Scotland. Since most casks are being filled at 63.5% at newborn, and scotch whiskies need to be >40% abv to be legally called scotch whisky, most liquid have a maximum lifespan of ~45 years old before it reaches extremely close to 40% abv and needs to be bottled. It is only under the extremely rare condition of microclimate influences, with a unique combination of low temperature and low humidity at certain positions in the warehouses that fosters the rare occurrence of ultra-old aged casks. These casks are not only a freak of nature but are truly one in a million miracles from the millions of casks reserves in Scotl♊and. With that in mind, let’s ꦑtake a look at the oldest Macallan, as well as the oldest whisky to have ever been bottled in history, and appreciate the path it took for it to currently appear before our eyes.

Having sold for HKD4.75m in Hong Kong in 2023 in Sotheby’s, this bottle has now returned to 2024 Sotheby’s Hong Kong Spring Sale as the top lot of the sale. Distilled in 1940, an extremely turbulent time in history, the 3 hands on the Sculpture represented Allan Shiach – Chairman of Macallan in 1940, distillery workers of 1940 and Kirsteen Campbell, Master Whisky Maker of present day Macallan, who worꦆked hand in hand transcending time t✤o bring this whisky to life.

As Kirsteen Campbell herself puts it:

“It’s hard to put into words h🧜ow truly special this whisky is. The expression

encapsulates the s🦋pirit♓ of The Macallan and the timeless nature of our mastery.

and craftsmanship, which continues to this day.”

Tasting notes:

NOSE
Dark chocolate, swe𝓰et cinnamon, aromatic peat, plums, leather, 🥃pink grapefruit, redcurrant jelly and a rich resinous note

PALATE
Treacle toffee, brambl🤪e jam, licorice, crystalised ginger, nutmeg, charred pineapple, pecans and woodsmoke

FINISH
Intensely rich, sweet and smoky

Other extremely rare and preciꦆous Macallans in🙈clude:

50-Year-Old Malts from Suntory

Another extremely interesting whisky that we would love to draw your attention to is the Suntory 1962 bottled for the 50th Anniversary of Young President’s Organization. Not only was this bottle never sold to the public, but it has also rarely appeared in any auction since its release, and it is the first time Sotheby’s had the honor of presenting it to you. Despite some online sources presenting it as a single malt, small prints at the back label have suggested that it is in fact a blended whisky, with both “malt” and “grain” being its components. However, there is no doubt that the malt whisky in the bottle that has been aged for more than 50 years in Mizunara Oak, is in fact from Yamazaki Distillery, since during 1962 it was the only operating distillery under Suntory’s management at the time. This makes it one of the oldest Mizunara-aged whiskies you could possibly taste, older than the Yamazaki Junshin (純真) and right after the Yamazaki 55-Year-Old. The grain component in the liquid is likely to have been bought from elsewhere given the fact that Suntory did not have an operating grain distillery back in 1962. The creator behind this masterpiece is Suntory’s 5th Master Blender Shinji Fukuyo (福與伸二).

Other notable highlights of Japanese whisk♕ies inc﷽lude:

Kaleidoscope of Ichiro’s Malt

The Chichibu Distillery located in the Saitama prefecture (琦玉縣) has always been a top destination travel location for Japanese whisky fans. From the legacy of the Hanyu Distillery to the current hype of Chichibu Distillery, Ichiro Akuto’s dedication and vision towards Japanese whisky has always captured the hearts of whisky fans around the world, and the quality of his bottlings always speaks for itself. Let’s look at the huge variety of his creations, from Hanyu, to Chichibu, to blends, and admire his masไtery of blending, distilling, and marketing.
