Sotheby’s presents the seventh installment of the magnificent Bibliotheca Brookeriana. A number of volumes offered here have significant royal provenance: this sale includes a dedication copy bound for presentation to King Henry VIII of England, majestic bindings for Henri II and Henri III of France, and a volume owned by Philip III of Spain in his youth. Important bindings for significant collectors encompass the only extant three-volume set of Apollo and Pegasus bindings for Grimaldi, three characteristic gold-tooled bindings for Thomas Mahieu, and others for Marcus Fugger, Jacques-Auguste De Thou, and the Pillone library with their distinctive fore-edge paintings. Notable binders include Wotton Binder C, Gommar Estienne, the Vatican Bindery for Pius V, and the Ève Bindery. Illustrated books, including works on heraldry, historical figures, and illustrated editions of Dante and Petrarch are also among the offerings, alongside a fine selection of manuscripts, spanning sixteenth-century diplomas, patents of nobility, and ducal commissions, many with contemporary illumination.
