Richard West writes, "After the artist's return from his last trip in Greenland, he settled permanently (except for occasional trips) in the Adirondacks. Located near the town of Au Sable Forks, his home was situated in a verdant valley he called Asgaard ("Home of the Gods"). During the 1940s through the 1960s, the majority of Kent's new works were views of Asgaard and the surrounding area. This painting is one of that series, captures a portion of the Au Sable River rapids near the artist's home. Other examples of this subject exist, such as the oil Au Sable River Rapids of circa 𓃲1950 in the collections of the muse꧂um at SUNY, Plattsburgh.
In this painting...Kent concentrates on the power and sweep of the current as it tumbles over and around the massive rocks in the river, conꦆtrasted with a delicate frieze of trees and distant houses on the far shore. The artist constructs the rocks with strong, easy strokes enlivened by touches of color set off by the scumbled white foam and vivid gr😼een hues of the water."
