Catalogue Note
While traveling on the Erie Railroad to meet fellow artist John Frederick Kensett at Niagara Falls, Cropsey spent five days in Hornelsville, New York, during which he produced two known pencil sketches of the falls, Middle Falls, Portage (1852, The Newington-Cropsey Foundation) and Middle Falls, Genesee River, Portage (1852, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). Middle Falls, Portage inspired the present work. During his brief visit, Cropsey was struck by the natural beauty of the Genesee River and remarked in a letter to his wife: "Oh! How wonderful is the creator in his works" (letter to Maria, Hornelsville, New York, August 5, 1852, The Newington-Cropsey Foundation, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York).
