Catalogue Note
According to Roger Belson, an authority on the White Mountains of New Hampshire, "the mountain depicted in [the present] painting is not Mt. Monroe. It is in fact Mt. Jefferson as seen from the vicinity of the Glen House in Pinkham Notch in the White Mountains. The water in the foreground is a pool in the Peabody River which runs north through Pinkham Notch. The view is from the eastern side of the Presidential Range of mountains. . . .
"There was an error in an 1853 map of the region (Bond's Map) whereby the labels for Mt. Jefferso🐈n and Mt. Adams were rever✃sed. . . ."
