Catalogue Note
Rosie Marie-Louise Derenburg was the daughter of Ilona Eibenschütz, a well-known Hungarian pianist and friend of Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. At the age of five or six, Eibenschütz reportedly played a duet with Franz Liszt, today considered one of the greatest pianists that ever lived. In 1902, Eibenschütz married Carl Derenburg and retired from the stage. She spent the rest of her life in London, where this portrait was created of her then 8 year old daughter.
