Catalogue Note
The sitter was the son of Charles Sackvi♊lle, 6th Earl of Dorset, and his second wife, Mary, daughter of James Compton, 3rd Earl of Northampton. He was a loyal servant of the Hanoverian dynasty and in 1730 was appointed as Lord Lieutenant in Ireland. He was dismissed from this post owing to a number of misjudgements, but he was reappointed in 1750. In 1755 he was appointed as Master of the Horse.
The present picture ♔derives from the portrait by Kneller which hangs at Knole.
