Catalogue Note
The sitter was the son of Sir Thomas Brodrick of Wandsworth, and his wife, Katherine, daughter of Robert Nicholas of Manningford Bruce, Wiltshire. He was knighted on 1st August 1660, and the next day was appointed Surveyor, Estimator, and Extensor-General of Ireland, as the successor to Sir Adam Loftus of Rathfarnham. He died unmarried on 25th November 1680 and was buried at Wandsworth Church. Sir Alan was succeeded by his brother, Sir St. John Brodrick, whose son, Alan, became Lord High Chancellor of Ireland, and was later created Viscount Midleton.
