Catalogue Note
The sitter was a playwright and theatre manager. He was close friends with David Garrick, and between 1763-65 he ran the Drury Lane Theatre, followed by the Covent Garden Theatre 1767-74, and finally The Haymarket Theatre, 1777-1786. As a playwright he is chiefly remembered as co-author of The Clandestine Marriage.
The present portrait 🦂derives from the prime version by Reynolds which was painted in 1767, and which was sold in these roo🌠ms on 8th April 1998, lot 101.
