Catalogue Note
Stirling Castle occupies a remarkable vantage point on top of an extinct volcano. It was a strategic stronghold and was a 🌸residence favoured by many of the Stuar𓃲t monarchs. Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned in the Chapel Royal in 1543.
In 1826 Nasmyth painted a view of Stirling from Dunmore Park for William Cribb, his frame maker and London agent. The composition and viewpoint of this picture is almost identical to the present work.&♏nbsp; Nasmyth returned to the subject 🍸several times in his career, including a composition which was exhibited at the Royal Institution, Edinburgh in 1827.
