Catalogue Note
The still life painter Louis Hubner, was a native of Berlin and settled in Norwich in about 1740. He was perhaps encouraged to come by a fellow German, John Theodore Heins, who had been working there as a portrait painter since about 1720. A brief obituary in The Norwich Mercury of 27th May 1769 noted that he "had resided near 30 Years in this City. His chief Excellence as a Painter, was in still Life: in most of his Pieces, are Marks of intense Application, perspicious and bold Expression, and Elegance in Colouring..." The Norwich Mercury also recorded auction sales of his pictures in 1748, 1750 and 1757.
