Catalogue Note
As David Mitchinson has observed, "Moore's works are probably best known among the general public for their holes, yet a surprisingly small number actually have them. At the earliest stage in Moore's career a hole was a daring feat in sculptural terms. A lifetime of observing nature's openings in bones, flints, wood and pebbles led Moore to an almost perfect understanding of their natural occurrence, as opposed to the forced existence created in a piece of stone. This sculpture's forms are dictated by the natural object in which the artist sought and found inspiration" (Henry Moore: From the Inside Out, Plasters, Carvings and Drawings (exhibition catalogue), Musée des Beaux Arts, Nantes; Städtische Kunsthalle, Mannheim, 1996-97, p. 164).
