Catalogue Note
In 1885 Edwin Lord Weeks produced a painting titled The Last Voyage - A Souvenir of the Ganges, depicting a dying fakir crossing the Ganges by boat before cremation on the banks of the river. The current artist appears to have taken inspiration from this or a simalar work of the ghats🌞. Devout Hindus believe that their death and cremation in the holy city of Varanasi will result in personal salvation from the cycle of death and rebirth and the cr൩emation ghats in the center of the city became a popular subject for western artists who visited the site.
