Catalogue Note

William Zorach's Spirit of the Dance was one🌺 of several designs submitted for the lobby of the new Radio City Music Hall in 1930, and chosen to be the primary sculpture. The figure, depicting a kneeling dancer at the finale of the dance, was originally planned at 36 inches high. However, a three foot figure would have been too small for its intended space and the height of the sculpture was increased to six and a half feet, proportionally making the figure iౠtself nearly nine-feet. While the figure at Radio City Music Hall was cast in aluminum, Zorach made only six bronze editions of the work.
