Description

  • a marble pilaster
of triangular form, carved on two faces one with two cherubs holding up a trophy of arms, the other with a mermaid supporting baskets of fruit

Condition

This relief is in good condition however there are chips to the edges and a missing section on the top left side (see catalogue photo). Otherwise there is general wear and and chips consistent with age.

Catalogue Note

This pilaster would have once formed part of an architectural ensemble, possibly from a balustrade.  Compare with two pilasters in the Museo Civico, Turin attributed to a Tuscan workshop of the late 15th to early 16th century  as well as two in the Louvre from a chimney piece
