Condition

This Madonna and Child are survivors and exhibit wear consistent with having been exposed to the elements. The base and figure are carved separately and the crown is associated. There is a loss to the Child's head and cracks throughout along the grain of the marble which are likely the result of prolonged exposure to a damp environment. There are traces of later paint particularly on her sides. Chips, cracks and losses throughout.

Catalogue Note

This sensitively carved depiction of the Virgin and Child is consistent with extant figures that survive from the first third of the 14th century.  In her right hand the Virgin holds a lily, symbol of Virginity, whilst the fragmentary Child is held in her left hand. He is reaching out towards the bird, representing the Soul, on her breast.  Her mantle falls in soft folds emphasising her contra posto position. Compare in particular with the Virgin and Child in the Louvre originating from Beauvais in the Oise region (inv. no. RF 1775).
