Catalogue Note

The present crèche reflects the tradition of  tableaux popular in the coral workshops of Trapani in the 17th century and which by the 18th century had been developed with the use of intricately carved ivory and bone figures in glazed frames.  Particularly of note was the workshop of Andrea (1725-1766) and Alberto (1732-1785) Tipa. For examples of their work see the 1966 exhibition catalogue.
