Catalogue Note
The pose of Hercules poised to attack a serpent is inspired by Giambologna's Samson and the Phiಞlistine in the Victoria and Albert Museum. T♍he present model, however, was conceived in the 18th century and is more reminiscent of the sculpture of Giambologna's northern followers, of which this a later inspiration. A similar bronze was sold in Paris in March of 2003.
