Condition
STRUCTURE
The canvas has been lined.
PAINT SURFACE
The painting appears to be in good, clean condition. There is a small area of re-touching to the paint surface upper right, and a small vertical area of paint shrinkage upper left of about six inches in length, not immediately visible to the naked eye.
ULTRAVIOLET
Ultraviolet light reveals scattered light re-touching to the background and a small area of repair work lower centre, of about six inches in length. Re-touching and infilling of cracquelure to the faces and hands of both Cromwell and his page has been carried out. Additionally there is a small concentrated area of re-touching to the upper left of the canvas. UV generally reveals the painting to be in well preserved condition.

Piper, Catalogue of Seventeenth Century Portraits in the National Portrait Gallery 1625-1714, 1963, p. 91)
