Catalogue Note

The sitters were the great grandsons of John Taylor (1711-1775), the founder of Taylor and Lloyds Bank which ultimately became Lloyd's Bank.  Taylor and Lloyds ran for about 100 years. James Arthur joined the family firm, but in 1853 he and his half brother William Francis resigned from it. The Taylors had owned a large amount of land in Birmingham much of which was sold by James' son Arthur James. Humphrey Lloyd relates the history of the Taylor family and Lloyds Bank, in The Quaker Lloyds in the Industrial Revolution, 1975.
