Catalogue Note
Ryckaert came from a family of Antwerp artists. He travelled in Italy, sketching the campagna, between 1605 and 1610 and returend to Antwerp in 1611 where he registered in the Guild of St. Luke as "Merten Rycaert, schilder met eenem erm" (painter with🍌 one arm.); despite his handicap Ryckaert produced lovely rolling landscapes such as this and the following lot.
We are grateful to Jan de Maere for confiming the attribution to Ryckaert on the basis of a transparency. He suggested that this⭕ paintinꦛg is an early work by the artist.
