Catalogue Note
The present picture, clearly betrays Migliari's style and recalls his interest in set design. Following a period of local training in Alessandria, Giovanni Migliari moved to Milan. In that city, he worked under the tutelage of Gaspare Galliari, a famous designer for whom he executed stage sets for the Teatro Carcano and La Scala. He then specialized in landscape painting with a predilection for fantastic architecture and capricci in a typical Venetian style. Remaining aloof from the predominant neoclassical trend amongst Milanese artists at this time, Migliari favored precise pictures in which he could show off his skill as a scene painter.
