Catalogue Note
The vigorously carved and drilled curls of hair, the ovoid face and classical profile seen in present bust are analagous to several marble sculptures executed early in the career of the Orvietan sculptor, Ippolito Scalza. His Saint Sebastian, originally made for the Cathedral in Orvieto (Cambareri, op.cit., fig. 16) and his Saint John the Evangelist also made for the Cathedral (Cambareri, op.cit.,fig.35) display similar treatment of the hair and face.
