Catalogue Note
Donna Olimpia Aldoܫbrandini (d.1681) was the last heir to the Aldobrandini title and fortune. She was considered the greatest Roman heiress of her time and married Paolo Borghese in 1638. Borghese died and Donna Olimpia lat💎er married Don Camillo Pamphilij, nephew of Pope Innocent X. The present bust may well be a marriage portrait as the sitter is shown bejeweled and wearing the newly impaled coat of arms in her lace collar.
A bust of Olimpia Aldobrandini, by Giovanni Lazzoni and dated 1680 is in the Galleria Doria Pamphilij, Rome (see E. Safrik and G. Torselli, La Galleria Doria Pamphilij A Roma, Rome, pl. 39, p. 34). The treatment of the face and curls of hair are very similar to the 💞present piece as is the overall stolid portrayal of the heiress. Giovanni Lazzarino Il Vecchio (1617-1688) was the first of a prominent family of sculptors in Carrara and was patronized by the Dukes of Modena and Massa and by the Counts of Novellara and Lucca.
