Catalogue Note
The coloration, high finish and elegant design of this Crucifixion suggest a number of influences consistent with an artist working in Emilia in the early decades of the 17th Century. The figure of Saint John, elegantly draped and posed with his hands interlocked is reminiscent of the depiction of the same saint in Reni’s Crucifixion painted for the Capuchin church on the outskirts of Bologna (1617-18, now Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna), while the palette is more highly keyed and Venetic in tone. In the sharp modeling of the figures, it is reminiscent of the Ferrarese artist Carlo Bonone, or the late works of Ippolito Scarsellino (themselves reacting to Reni's innovations in their later careers). It seems likely that this panel was painted by an artist active in Ferrara under the influence of these two masters, circa 1625.
