Catalogue Note
The central figures of the Madonna and Child, holding a marguerite and resting on a wall, is derived from a painting by Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio (formerly in the collection of Walter P. Chrsyler, sold Sotheby's, New York, June 1, 1989, lot 8). The background details, the clothing of the Madonna as well as her facial type, and other details, however, are quite different from the Boltraffio prototype, and rather seem to be imagined in the style of Raphael or another Umbrian artist.
