Catalogue Note

Raised in a family of artists, the Ger൩man painter Christian Wilhelm Karl Kehrer excelled as an animal painter from a very young age.

In 1800, Kehrer executed some illustrations for  Fr. von Widegun's Livre de poche des amis de la forêt et de la chasse, and in that same year, the he exhibited a painting of a roe deer at the Academy o🎃f Fine Arts, Berlin.

Throughout his career, Kehrer was a favorite 𝔉among the most eminent members of the German aristocracy.  In 1803, at thirty-three years old, Kehrer was appointed as the curator of the collection of the Duchess of Braunschweig-Bevern in Saarbruggen and in Paris. In 1813, he was commissioned by Friedrich I von Wurtemberg to decorate his castle at Freudenthal with themes from the hunt, and in 1823, the artist was commissioned by Duke Wilhem of Nassau to execute fifteen large hunting scenes for his castle at Wiesbaden. Kehrer's other artistocratic clients were the Baron von Spie🐈gel, the Count von Cassel, the Duke d'Issenburg-Birstein, and the Princes of Wittgenstein and Wurtemberg.  Quite a few of Kehrer's works are currently exhibited in the Darmstadt Museum.
