This painting repeats the composition of what must be a prime autograph version now lost by Ribera. Spinosa considers the best known version to be the picture in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan.   Even though the Brera picture is signed and dated 1638, Spinosa considers it to be a workshop replica.  There are several other studio versions of this work one in the Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, a second in the Musée de Beaux Arts, Caen, as well as versions in the churches of San Pietro ad Aram and Santa Maria in Portico, Naples (See N. Spinosa, Ribera, L'Opera Completa, Naples 2003, p. 349, cat. B13).
