Catalogue Note
William Jones was a still life painter working at Bath, where he settled in 1769. He exhibited still lifes from 1764 - 1771. Ellis Waterhouse (see "British Eighteenth Century Paintings" in Dictionary of British Art, Woodbridge 1981, p. 199) notes a group of paintings dated 1777 at Gosford Park by the artist; the present work, dated two years later, would document the latest work known by the artist.
