Catalogue Note
This small copper depicting Stanislas King of Poland was painted by Guillaume Ranc, the brother of Jean Ranc one of the most important French portrait painters active in the French court in the early 18th century. In the present painting, he has depicted the King, who had recently been exiled from Poland to France. The present work is dated 1730. The King is depicted wearing his blue sash, a symbol of the Order of the Holy Spirit, awarded to Stan🍬islas by the French court in 1725. Stanislas would recover his royal title only briefly after his exile, reigning again from 1733 until 1736. Ranc has chosen to paint the dethroned and defeated King still in full majestic glory, most likely a decision made at the request of his patron.
